Graceling
So, Randa has found another mission for Katsa, but she really doesn't want to do it. Randa had promised another king to help find a wife for his son, so he wanted a lord to give up one of his daughters. When the lord refused, Randa got very angry and sent Katsa to torture him in front of his daughters until one agreed to marry the other King's son. When she got there though, Katsa didn't do anything to the lord and she just left him unharmed. Also, Katsa learned that one of the people that accompanies her - Giddon is in love with her. Apperently, everyone except Katsa knew, because she isn't good with those kinds of things. I think she's actually falling in love with the Lienid price, but I can't tell for sure.
Some of my Reader's Responses give away the story, so watch out for spoilers!

Reader's response # 2 - Week of 5/9/11
Graceling
I read a lot of the book and not many of my questions have been answered. Instead of answering them, it made me ask more. First, when Katsa was rescuing the old Lienid prince, she met another graceling fighter. A couple nights later, she saw him againg at Randa's castle and now they're really good friends. He came to find his grandfather - the Lienid prince, so Katsa told him where he was. He is staying at the castle longer though, to train with Katsa. Since they are both very skilled at fighting, they could never find a match that would actually challemge them, so they took it as a great opportunity to practice. A long time has gone by since the old man's been there, and still, no one knows who took him or why he was kidnapped. I really want to know, because I think it's a really big part of the book.

Graceling
God, I want to punch something right now. So, I'm looking back and I just realized that ALL of my reader's responses I did this week are gone. I have no idea how or why, but now I have to retype them all. Ugh, technology sucks.
I honestly don't remember what I wrote, so I guess I have to read more and write something totally different. Great. So, this book is about a girl, Katsa, who is graced with..I think either the skill of fighting or killing. In her world or kingdom or whatever it is she lives in, Gracelings are looked down upon and feared. Katsa is like the king's servant. When he has enemies that owe him money or they don't get along with him, Randa sends Katsa to injure/kill them. The big thing going on right now is that the king of Murgon - One of the seven kingoms, has kidnapped the Lienid prince. He's really old though, so I don't know why anyone would want him. Anyways, Randa sent Katsa to kidnap him. Actually, no Katsa works with something they call the council and I think she did it with the council. Randa doesn't even know the old man is in his castle. This book is really confusing, but I think it makes it more interesting.

When You Reach Me
Again, I didn't read much, so this book still doesn't make much sense. I think it's one of thoses books where you have to read it from cover to cover to understand it. I don't think Sal is dead, because on the back it says "I am coming to save your friend's life and my own" Someone is writing Miranda mysteriouse notes, and I think that's who she's talking to in the book. At first I thought she was talking to Sal, but now I'm pretty sure she's talking to the pertson writing her notes. The person writing the notes might be the crazy hobo that live under a mailbox. I think her was put into that story for a reason, and I think that's it. Also, I think Sal is alive, but just missing. Or, he could be perfectly safe, Miranda just doesn't mention him because he's not her friend anymore. I have a little less than half this book left and I can't wait to actually understand it!

If I Should Die Before I Wake
Chana has joined the marching orchestra at the concentration camp, so now she has better treatment. The other girls tease her a lot though and she isn't exactly living really well, but it's a start. I think the concentration camps will be freed soon. Chana has met a twelve year old girl and made friends with her. I think she's pretty close to dying though, which is really sad. I hope Chana makes it out, because she's learned so much, and she has so much of her life to live. Also, there's been some foreshadowing hinting that Hilary might die before she comes out of her coma. i really hope she doesn't, because just like Chana, she has so much to learn and live. I think Hilary will live though, because her dream would be a waste if she didn't.

When You Reach Me
This book is apart a girl Miranda, who lives with her mom hem mom's girlfriend. I think her best friends just died because there's parts where she remembers times the had together, or she says stuff like "I wish you were still here." I didn't get very far, but the book seems pretty interesting! Her mom finally got onto a game show she's been trying to get on for three years and I want to know how that turns out. I also really want to know what happened to Miranda's best friend, Sal. I don't know if the committed suicide, died unexpectedly or was murdered, but I'm pretty sure he died. I feel really sorry for Miranda, because she's twelve like me and I couldn't imagine losing my best friend. It would probably be really tough, but she doesn't talk about it much. Maybe her didn't die...? It's a little confusing, but I really want to get through this book!

When Zachary Beaver Came To Town
Zachary Beaver is staying in town a lot longer that planned, because his manager/guardian has left and no one knows where he is. Cal and Toby start talking to him, and soon they start going to his trailer to talk often. At first, it was because the sheriff made them go, but now they're going by will. I think that Zachary's manager won't come back until towards the end of the book, because if he comes back, they have to leave Antler and the story ends quick. I also think Cal, Toby and Zachary will become better friends because they visit Zachary so much. Also, Toby likes this really pretty girl-Scarlett but I don't think they'll end up together because Toby is too...awkward? She also just broke up with her boyfriend, so she probably won't want to go out with Toby so soon.

If I Should Die Before I Wake
I'm starting to understand this book a lot more now, because it doesn't switch from Chana and Hilary as much. I think it's because Chana is going through something much bigger than Hilary, so it fills up more chapters. I'm still not really sure if this is a dream or not, but it doesn't feel like Hilary is dreaming; it seems like she is actually another person.
Chapter 12 ends with Chana's mother and sister being taken away from the ghetto, to somewhere probably worse. Chana is left with her Grandmother in the ghetto and I think they might be sent to a concentration camp soon. It's really sad reading this book, because it's not talking about Jews in general. You get to see what Chana personally goes through, and how hard it is for her. It hasn't gotten that bad though, I'm sure it could be a lot worse. Of course, that comes from someone who could never even imagine who terrible that must be, so to Chana, it couldn't get worse. Her father was shot by the nazis, she as been sent to a disgusting place to live, her baby sister had to be sent away somewhere else, her mother and other sister were just taken away and it can only get worse from here. I ope Hilary doesn't die in the end, because this experience is teaching her so much and it would be a total waste for her to not get the chance to change herself.

When Zachary Beaver Came To Town
I read this book last year, but when I saw it on the shelf I HAD to pick it up and read it again. I forgot some of the story, but I remember I loved it. It may be my obsession with chubby kids, or just the style of the writing, but I can't put this book down! I like how it's a pretty easy read, but it sill keeps you hooked.
It starts off with Toby, the main-ish character, saying how rare it is for something interesting to happen in his town. He and his friend, Cal, are in line to see the world's fattest boy - Zachary Beaver. I think it's a little sad to go make fun of a fat kid, and pay for it , but I guess if I lived in a small town where everything is the same, I might go too. Zachary has to sit in a cramped trailer all day, having people walk through it staring at him and laughing. I would probably have a breakdown eventually, because I couldn't take sitting down all day, being separated from the world with a piece of glass, being advertised as the Fattest kid in the world. It would definitely lower my self esteem, but Zachary doesn't seem to care. I got through almost half this book, because it got so hard for me to stop(:

Gilda Joyce and the Ghost Sonata
So, I read more chapters, and the book hasn't gotten any better stylistically. It seems a little dry and boring but the plot go a little better. As I predicted, Gilda found a way to go to England by entering the contest as Wendy's page turner. They fly overseas with Wendy's piano teacher and a couple other students. They heck in at a really old home/hotel and get settle down. The first night there, Wendy thinks she hears a piano playing, but then remembers that there isn't a piano in the house. I think this is probably a ghost, because there's a little foreshadowing in the book suggesting it is. The story is getting better, and even though it is a little boring, I want to know what happens next.

Gilda Joyce and the Ghost Sonata
I found this book on my shelf, and since I got tired of reading my other book, I decided to read this one.I'm only up to chapter 4, because honestly, it's a pretty stupid book. It's about Gilda Joyce, obviously, and she considers herself a psychic. She's good at tarot cards and predicting things, but I think it would be really creepy if I knew someone that could do that.
At the end of the chapter, Gilda learns that her best friends, Wendy just got into a prestigious piano competition in England, and she is trying to find a way to tag along. hat totally sounds like me, because if my best friend was going o Europe, I would try to find some way to go with her. I would go just for the adventure and to get out of one week of school, but Gilda wants to go because she would love to encounter a few ghosts. That would be incredibly creepy and it would leave me traumatized! I think Gilda will find a way to go to England, because if she doesn't it wouldn't make much of a story.

If I Should Die Before I Wake
I think I might need another book to read, since it's a little hard to do a response on one chapter..
Anyways, in chapter 8, Hilary is still Chana and her family is moved into a rotting apartment with lots of other Jews. I think they're making less of a deal that it really is, because they're acting like they don't realize that Nazi soldiers are everywhere. Chana's family never says they're scared or anything, but I know I would be if I was taken out of my home by the Nazis. Chana's family all have to work, but her and her sister must go to school. it turns out that later, Chana and her mom find out her little sister, Anya, is finding pieces of coal in the trash and selling them for food. a few days later, a couple moves into the small apartment with Chana's family. They are extremely demanding, and Chana doesn't like them at all. They kind of reminded me of the couple Anne Frank had to live with, because they were demanding and rude, like the people Chana has to deal with. They both demand a cot for each of them, because they are both "old" and they steal bread in the middle of the night to get more food. Since there are only two cots, they only get one and Chana finds out what they do at night soon, so everyone tries to save their food so they won't starve. At the end of chapter 8, something terrible happens to Chana, and I wonder how she'll deal with it.

If I Should Die Before I Wake
A lot has happened to Chana in the last couple of chapters, but Hilary is still in the hospital.
Chana and her family are in Shiva, which I guess is something Jewish people do when they're in mourning. Her family is really big, and I'm still a little confused on who's who, because their names are in a language I can't understand. I'm pretty sure Jakub is Chana's brother and she has two little sisters. Jakub is certain the nazis are going to get his family soon, so he and his friend leave to fight in the war (I think). After a while, Jakub returns, but by himself. His friend was shot by the nazis.
Meanwhile, in Hilary's body, she is still laying in a hospital bed, having weird dreams. Her mother comes in and starts reading the bible to her. The really weird thing is that Hilary can't see her mom, just hear her. She can see the Jewish lady clearly though, which makes me thinks she's not real even more, because Hilary only sees her.I can tell Hilary doesn't like her mom because when her father died, her mother left her for three days by herself. Hilary was only five and she had to survive on stale bread. I would never forgive my mother for something like that, especially if I was so little. It makes Hilary even madder that suddenly her mom believes in God and reads from the bible all the time. She doesn't support Hilary's extreme hate against Jews, and she doesn't like Hilary's boyfriend either.
I would really hate my mom after all that and I would feel like she doesn't approve of me. I think it must be terrible to lose a parent and get stuck with the one you like the least. I do hope Hilary and her mom become closer though, and I think Hilary will realize how lucky she is to still have a parent when she sees what Chana has to go through.

If I Should Die Before I Wake
Well, I read a couple more chapters and this book just got more confusing. As soon as chapter two starts, Hilary switches to Chana. I still can't tell if it's just a dream or not, but I think the old Jewish lady might have something to do with it. You know, like in Freaky Friday, where the old lady gives them the mother and daughter fortune cookies and they switch bodies? I think the Jewish lady has some kind of weird power. I'm kind of glad she does though, because Hilary needs to see what is happening to the Jews and that they're just innocent people. I don't think she realizes how much pain and despair the Nazis are causing and she definitely needs a wake up call.
When Hilary ends up in Chana's body, she is almost instantly put to work scrubbing floors. She has to use her new tights, and most women there have to use their own underwear to mop the floors. After lots of painful hours, Hilary/Chana can go, but only to find her father hanging by a tree, with Nazis threatening to shoot him because he is too old to work hard. Chana goes and does his work for him, but when she pauses for a split second, her father is shot. Then, Hilary is transported back and finds herself back in the hospital, screaming. She thinks it was all just a dream, but I think somehow, she is actually changing bodies. This is only the beginning of the switching bodies, or dreams of whatever. I kind of hope she goes through more painful things, to really experience what Jews do.

Our group only reads a chapter a day, so I haven't gotten very far in the book. It's about Hilary, a Neo-nazi girl living during World War 2. She gets in a motorcycle accident and ends up in a Jewish hospital, which bothers her a lot, since she hates Jews. Soon, she starts switching bodies from Hilary to Chana - a young Jewish girl.
The first few pages are just Hilary yelling at a Jewish woman in her hospital room. I don't know if she's thinking or talking, because there's no quotation marks, but it seems like she's talking. Honestly, as I kept reading, I started wondering if the old Jewish woman was there at all, or if Hilary was just imagining her. I think this book might bring up lots of questions, because it sounds a little confusing. One of mine is does she actually switch bodies from Hilary to Chana, or is it just a dream? Also, who is the real girl - Hilary or Chana?
I think this could either be a really good book, or a terrible and confusing one. It's too early to tell, but I'm not sure I like it.

Reader's Response # 1 Week of 2/7/11
I got this new book at the book fair, and it's pretty good so far. It's about a girl who's best friend Kirsty dies in an accident. After, she goes to her grandma's house in California while her parents go to Europe. Her grandma goes to church a lot, so Cathrine has to tag along. She starts hearing a voice in the church, saying her name. At first she thinks she's crazy, but she soon realizes there's actually a ghost in the church. I'm not really sure what will happen to Cathrine, she's just barely meeting the ghost. This book sounds a little weird, but I hope it gets better.

Reader's Response # 3 - Week of 2/28/11
Well, the book ended okay, Massie ends up selling hundreds of products by the end of the week and becoming one of he best sellers ever. She does it by telling her clients how ugly they really are, what products they need to buy and making them turn into someone they really aren't. The whole mission of the company was to help girls emphasize their beauty, not hide it, but Massie totally missed the whole point. Of course, she's still recognized and ends up with what she wanted. What i got from this was, if you're going to do something you don't want to, you might as well try to do it right.

Reader's Response # 2 - Week of 2/28/11
I'm almost done with this book, I'm probably around three - fourths through. After Massie comes home, her parents tell her she has to pay them back for her summer camp, so she has to get a job. She starts looking for a "jobby" which is a job you do for fun, like a hobby, but you make money off it, like a job. Massie sees an article about being a cosmetics saleswoman in Teen Vogue, and decides that will be her jobby. She tries selling to her 'friends' in the Hamptons, but they all reject her products. I think the whole "jobby" thing is a great idea, because you're making money, but doing something you love.

Got another Clique book! I honestly don't know why I read these so much, they're not as good as other books I have read. Right now I'm reading Massie from the Summer Collection. I haven't gotten very far, but it's alright so far. It pretty much focuses on Massie's summer after seventh grade ends. She just got kicked out of riding camp for cheating in a competition and now she's stuck with her overly stressed out mom, who's throwing a party the day Massie gets kicked out. I noticed that while the storyline of these books may not be the best, it has really great sentences. It's kind of like exploding the moment, because it describes something ordinary in two or three sentences, so it makes it sound like more of a big deal.
Annie and I are thinking about doing the Edible books contest for literacy night, and I think I'm doing my entry on the first book, The Clique. I hope it turns out well!

Reader's Response # 3 - Week of 2/21/11
Eh, not much has changed still. I really thought that Melinda would start making friends, but instead it's the opposite. The one person she hung out with is now with another group of girls and Melinda officially has no friends. In the book, she keeps mentioning this guy and how she's afraid of him, but I have no idea why. I don't know anything about this guy, or why he freaks out Melinda and it bothers me! Melinda has also started cutting herself and skipping school. I feel really sorry for her, because she doesn't have a single friend, and I know that would make me feel really lonely. The people at her school still haven't forgiven her for calling the cops, and they have no intention of getting to know her. This book has amazing detail, and it's really good to read it before the TAKS. It's really descriptive and I think my writing could use a lot more of that.

Reader's Response # 2 - Week of 2/21/11
I don't know if it's just me, but most of the books I read seem to go really slowly. Maybe this genre just doesn't really interest me..? Anyways, Melinda's still a loser, not much has really changed. Even though not much happens at a time in this book, it has lots of details. The characters are described really well and I have a pretty good idea of their personalities. I hope there's like a sudden twist or something, to make this story more interesting. I hope Melinda moves, or finds new friends, because she's spent a lot of class time hiding out in a janitor's closet and forging tardy passes. She's apparently really good at basketball, so maybe she'll make new friends on the team is she makes it. Also, her old friend Ivy is starting to talk to her a little, so maybe they'll start hanging out again. Another thing that Melinda has to go through is her family that doesn't really communicate. She's an only child and her parents are usually extremely occupied with their jobs. For Thanksgiving, her mom got an emergency call from her store and her dad ordered pizza. That's like...breaking up with someone on Valentine's day...or not having a Christmas tree on Christmas. I think that would be pretty depressing, and now I'm glad my mom kind of overdoes it on the holidays. This book pretty much made me realize my life could be a LOT worse.

Reader's Response # 1 - week of 2/21/11
This book is called Speak, and it's pretty good so far. It's about a girl, Melinda , who had a pretty normal life until the summer before high school. There was an end of the year party held, and she called the cops because it got out of hand. A few people were arrested, so now everyone hates her. On her first day of high school, people give her death glares and her old friends act like they don't know her. She meets another girl, Heather, who is also completely friendless. Melinda thinks Heather is really annoying, but she hangs out with Heather anyways, so she'll have someone to talk to. I think it would really suck to be in Melinda's position, because it's not like when you're a new student. When you're a new student, no one knows you and you can start fresh. Melinda has doesn't have friends either, but not many people want to be her friend, so her choices are pretty limited. I think Melinda's pretty brave too, because she probably knew calling the cops was social suicide, but she did it anyways.

Reader's Response #3 - Week of 2/14/11
This book is getting old! I only read 30 minutes and I'm already sick of it. I'm definitely getting a new book today. So not much has really happened, the party is STILL going on. Kristen is calling Massie every five minutes, crying because her parents didn't let her go to the party. Oh yeah, earlier that day, the four girls wore their Halloween costumes to school, which show much more skin than the school allows. They got caught, and Kristen got grounded. I think it was a really stupid idea to wear the costumes to school, especially if you ran a risk of getting grounded right before a huge party. Massie didn't get punished, because her parents are pretty laid back, but I know my parents would freak out. They probably wouldn't let me dress like they did for Halloween or throw a huge party, but ehhh you get my point. I wish there was more to write about, but this is all I can get from this book. I think I will read this series when I have more free time, and do my reader's responses on other books.

Reader's Response #2 - Week of 2/14/11
So this counts as a reader's response right? It's my thoughts on the article about how important personal narratives are.
I think this article is a good example of why it's so important to be able to write good essays. I think you can tell a lot about a college applicant from their personal essay. They could have straight A's in language arts, but it really doesn't say much abut them. If I was the head or dean or principal, or whatever they call it of a college, I think I would require an essay, because it tells you if they're a good writer, it tells you a little bit about their personal experience and how much effort they put into their work. I never thought essays were that big of a deal, but i have realized that you are actually going to use them later on in your life.

Reader's Response #1 - Week of 2/14/11
Whoohoo more Clique books! This one's called Best Friends for Never. Basically, it's getting close to Halloween, and some people think Massie is "slipping". To keep her status as the most popular girl, she decides to throw a huge boy-girl Halloween party. The only problem is that she has to co-host with Claire, who doesn't know the first thing about throwing a party. She hires a professional party planner and throws the party, but Claire keeps getting in the way. The book goes really slowly, and I'm pretty sure the only thing that it talks about is the party. This book isn't really as interesting as the first one, because not much happens. I don't really like books where the whole plot is centered on one event, but I'm not going to drop this book yet. Knowing me though, my next reader's response will probably be about how I'm getting sick of this book.

I was so busy today, I totally forgot I still had one Reader Response left! Sorry Ms. Green looks like you owe Mr. Doyen a sonic drink!(: Well I'm going to try to get to get this done before midnight...
Almost done with the book! I would have finished it, but I'm so tired, I'm about to fall asleep!
So now, Claire has been sneaking into Massie's room while she's gone and Instant Messaging Massie's friends, telling them all of Massie's secrets they don't know, and turning them against her. This made me so mad, I mean it just makes Claire look really jealous! I think it was a really stupid thing for her to do, because she wasn't going to be able to hide it forever. Also, it wasn't going to make her fit in, it was just going to make Massie hate her even more. For the short period of time no one knows Claire is the one they're instant messaging, Massie is kicked out of the group, and everyone suddenly loves Claire. Eventually Massie does figure out what's happening and Claire sinks to the bottom once again. I think she deserved it, because making someone's friends turn against them isn't a very good way to make them like you. Just saying.

Ahh I just love this book! I wish I had more time to read it! I'll probably get a couple of the other books in the series to read over the weekend. I think Lisi Harrison did a great job writing this book, because it totally pulls you in and makes you feel like part of the story. The characters are good too, because they each have their own personality and you can relate to them in some way. i would have to say my least favorite character is Claire. I feel sorry for her when Massie and her friends are really mean to her, but I have to admit she's pretty annoying. Since she's living in Massie's guest house, she tags along wherever she goes and tries to hang out with Massie's friends. I can imagine how Massie must feel, especially because her and Claire are so different. I hate it when I have to invite someone to something when they weren't originally invited and it's my job to make them feel invited. Like when Massie's mom made her invite Claire to the sleepover she was having with her friends, Massie had no choice but to invite her, and she had to be somewhat nice to Claire. Claire ended up leaving after everyone went to sleep which really annoyed me, because if you're already there, why leave?
I got the same feeling about Claire when I watched the movie a while ago. I seriously wanted to punch her if I could because she just got on my nerves so much! I guess that's how you know a book is well written!

Reader's Response #1- Week of 1/31/11
Title-The Clique
Time- 35 minutes
Pages-66
Normally, my "getting a book" routine consists of running into the library between passing periods, grabbing a book off a random shelf and checking it out, all in less than a minute. Most of the time I get a pretty good book, and sometimes I get a "What the heck am I reading?!" book. Today, I managed to get "The Clique". I have heard about these books from a lot of people, but considering how much time I give myself to pick out a book, I never got around to reading one of them. I started reading it and I loved it! I love how I can totally relate to some of the things that happen in the book. For example it starts off with Massie Block's mom telling her she can't go on a Labor day shopping spree with her friends, because one of her dad's friends is going to stay at their house for while, and they're arriving at the same time Massie wants to go to the mall. I can't say how many times my mom has done this to me, where I tell her I have plans like two weeks before they actually happen, then the day before I go a party or the mall she says I can't go. That annoys me so much!
Another thing that I like reading about was Massie's glamorous life. She may be in seventh grade too, but she lives in designer heels, barely knows what a school bus is and goes to a great private school. This is obviously not at all what my life is like, which is why I like reading this book-because it's not exactly what my life is like, but I can still relate to it.
