Reader's Response #3 - Week of 4/4/11

When You Reach Me
Again, I didn't read much, so this book still doesn't make much sense. I think it's one of thoses books where you have to read it from cover to cover to understand it. I don't think Sal is dead, because on the back it says "I am coming to save your friend's life and my own" Someone is writing Miranda mysteriouse notes, and I think that's who she's talking to in the book. At first I thought she was talking to Sal, but now I'm pretty sure she's talking to the pertson writing her notes. The person writing the notes might be the crazy hobo that live under a mailbox. I think her was put into that story for a reason, and I think that's it. Also, I think Sal is alive, but just missing. Or, he could be perfectly safe, Miranda just doesn't mention him because he's not her friend anymore. I have a little less than half this book left and I can't wait to actually understand it!

If I Should Die Before I Wake

Chana has joined the marching orchestra at the concentration camp, so now she has better treatment. The other girls tease her a lot though and she isn't exactly living really well, but it's a start. I think the concentration camps will be freed soon. Chana has met a twelve year old girl and made friends with her. I think she's pretty close to dying though, which is really sad. I hope Chana makes it out, because she's learned so much, and she has so much of her life to live. Also, there's been some foreshadowing hinting that Hilary might die before she comes out of her coma. i really hope she doesn't, because just like Chana, she has so much to learn and live. I think Hilary will live though, because her dream would be a waste if she didn't.

Reader's Response #1 Week of 4/11/11

When You Reach Me

This book is apart a girl Miranda, who lives with her mom hem mom's girlfriend. I think her best friends just died because there's parts where she remembers times the had together, or she says stuff like "I wish you were still here." I didn't get very far, but the book seems pretty interesting! Her mom finally got onto a game show she's been trying to get on for three years and I want to know how that turns out. I also really want to know what happened to Miranda's best friend, Sal. I don't know if the committed suicide, died unexpectedly or was murdered, but I'm pretty sure he died. I feel really sorry for Miranda, because she's twelve like me and I couldn't imagine losing my best friend. It would probably be really tough, but she doesn't talk about it much. Maybe her didn't die...? It's a little confusing, but I really want to get through this book!

Reader's Response # 3 - Week of 4/4/11

When Zachary Beaver Came To Town

Zachary Beaver is staying in town a lot longer that planned, because his manager/guardian has left and no one knows where he is. Cal and Toby start talking to him, and soon they start going to his trailer to talk often. At first, it was because the sheriff made them go, but now they're going by will.  I think that Zachary's manager won't come back until towards the end of the book, because if he comes back, they have to leave Antler and the story ends quick. I also think Cal, Toby and Zachary will become better friends because they visit Zachary so much. Also, Toby likes this really pretty girl-Scarlett but I don't think they'll end up together because Toby is too...awkward? She also just broke up with her boyfriend, so she probably won't want to go out with Toby so soon.

Reader's Response # 2 - Week of 4/4/11

If I Should Die Before I Wake

I'm starting to understand this book a lot more now, because it doesn't switch from Chana and Hilary as much. I think it's because Chana is going through something much bigger than Hilary, so it fills up more chapters. I'm still not really sure if this is a dream or not, but it doesn't feel like Hilary is dreaming; it seems like she is actually another person.
Chapter 12 ends with Chana's mother and sister being taken away from the ghetto, to somewhere probably worse.  Chana is left with her Grandmother in the ghetto and I think they might be sent to a concentration camp soon. It's really sad reading this book, because it's not talking about Jews in general. You get to see what Chana personally goes through, and how hard it is for her. It hasn't gotten that bad though, I'm sure it could be a lot worse. Of course, that comes from someone who could never even imagine who terrible that must be, so to Chana, it couldn't get worse. Her father was shot by the nazis, she as been sent to a disgusting place to live, her baby sister had to be sent away somewhere else, her mother and other sister were just taken away and it can only get worse from here. I ope Hilary doesn't die in the end, because this experience is teaching her so much and it would be a total waste for her to not get the chance to change herself.

Reader's Response # 1 - Week of 4/4/11

When Zachary Beaver Came To Town

I read this book last year, but when I saw it on the shelf I HAD to pick it up and read it again. I forgot some of the story, but I remember I loved it. It may be my obsession with chubby kids, or just the style of the writing, but I can't put this book down! I like how it's a pretty easy read, but it sill keeps you hooked.

It starts off with Toby, the main-ish character, saying how rare it is for something interesting to happen in his town. He and his friend, Cal, are in line to see the world's fattest boy - Zachary Beaver. I think it's a little sad to go make fun of a fat kid, and pay for it , but I guess if I lived in a small town where everything is the same, I might go too. Zachary has to sit in a cramped trailer all day, having people walk through it staring at him and laughing. I would probably have a breakdown eventually, because I couldn't take sitting down all day, being separated from the world with a piece of glass, being advertised as the Fattest kid in the world. It would definitely lower my self esteem, but Zachary doesn't seem to care. I got through almost half this book, because it got so hard for me to stop(:

Reader's Response # 3 - Week of 3/28/11

Gilda Joyce and the Ghost Sonata

So, I read  more chapters, and the book hasn't gotten any better stylistically. It seems a little dry and boring but the plot go a little better. As I predicted, Gilda found a way to go to England by entering the contest as Wendy's page turner. They fly overseas with Wendy's piano teacher and a couple other students. They heck in at a really old home/hotel and get settle down. The first night there, Wendy thinks she hears a piano playing, but then remembers that there isn't a piano in the house. I think this is probably a ghost, because there's a little foreshadowing in the book suggesting it is. The story is getting better, and even though it is a little boring, I want to know what happens next.

Reader's Response # 2 - Week of 3/28/11

Gilda Joyce and the Ghost Sonata

I found this book on my shelf, and since I got tired of reading my other book, I decided to read this one.I'm only up to chapter 4, because honestly, it's a pretty stupid book. It's about Gilda Joyce, obviously, and she considers herself a psychic. She's good at tarot cards and predicting things, but I think it would be really creepy if I knew someone that could do that.

At the end of the chapter, Gilda learns that her best friends, Wendy just got into a prestigious piano competition in England, and she is trying to find a way to tag along.  hat totally sounds like me, because if my best friend was going o Europe, I would try to find some way to go with her. I would go just for the adventure and to get out of one week of school, but Gilda wants to go because she would love to encounter a few ghosts. That would be incredibly creepy and it would leave me traumatized! I think Gilda will find a way to go to England, because if she doesn't it wouldn't make much of a story.
